What You Didn’t See at the Oscars (Assuming You Watched it)

The ratings for 2018’s Oscars award show are in, and they are objectively abysmal.

While the program was once an annual celebration of films that made the greatest cultural impact, and the talent involved in making them, the broadcast has become a shadow of its former self. Instead, hours and hours are dedicated to propping up artsy, progressive movies no one has seen or cares about, and making blanket political statements designed to anger the majority of the people watching it.

Of course, host Jimmy Kimmel joked about the wave of sexual harassment scandals which have rocked the entertainment industry over the past year. Weirdly, this was coupled with montages of celebrities talking up what a wonderful place Hollywood is. Clearly, the self-delusion hasn’t faded: entertainment elites are still convinced they are the beacon of virtue they thought they were before #MeToo became a thing.

This meme reminds us that the sexual harassment culture in Hollywood is not new, and that elitist defenders still have a vested interest in pretending there is nothing to see there. Thankfully, the American audience seems to know better, and punished the industry accordingly on Sunday.
