Things You Shouldn’t Believe In if You’re an Actual Adult

Remember the innocence of childhood, when magic actually felt real?

Those of us who grew up in more secular households might not be able to relate, but there was something special about growing up believing there were magical beings out there who existed solely to take care of us. As an adult, it becomes hard to believe that a single individual would bend the rules of space and time just to deliver something to your house that you can get at your local retail store. But until that time comes, these childhood myths don’t cause any actual harm…or do they?

When you think about it, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders really is the Santa Claus for American millennials. He’s willing to give them everything they want, and waive his wand to make student loans disappear. He does all of this without substantiating exactly how he plans to do it, but it doesn’t matter — Sanders represents a glimmer of hope to a generation that has basically given up on itself.

This underscores the real philosophical problem with America right now — younger people have led themselves to believe that they can’t succeed on their own, so they need an all-powerful government to do it for them. Perhaps there is a danger in childhood myths after all…
