These are the Thought Leaders in the Democratic Party Right Now

Decades ago, a 43-year-old Democrat became the youngest person ever elected president in American history. That man, who was also the first Roman Catholic to hold the office, captivated young Americans with his promise that America was and will continue to be a land of opportunity for everyone who was willing to work for it. He lit a patriotic fire in everyone’s hearts when he said that we were going to moon not because it is easy — but because it is hard.

On policy, John F. Kennedy was unrecognizable from modern Democrats. He cut taxes for the middle class, and boldly rejected socialism. After all, he deployed America’s military against several communist regimes including Cuba and (to a limited extent) Vietnam. Believe it or not, this is what the Democratic Party used to be. While they were still the party of the New Deal, they were still a party that embraced capitalism as a net good, and understood communism for what it was — the ultimate evil in global politics.

Today’s Democrats could not be more different. Just look at Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — easily the two most popular members of the party today. They wholly reject capitalism, denouncing the provable fact that free market economies have done more to lift people out of poverty than anything else.

We’ve come a very long way from JFK — and that’s not a good thing.
