The Silver Lining in Socialism’s Shortages

Most Americans remember “socialism” being a practical curse word, and there’s no mystery as to why.

Throughout the bulk of the Cold War, even Democrats wanted little to nothing to do with the label. While millennials associate socialism with so-called Scandinavian utopias, socialism was once associated with the most oppressive regimes the world has ever seen, with the Soviet Union, North Korea, Cuba, and China being just a few examples.

Nowadays, the stigma attached to the philosophy of economic central planning and the minimization of private property has virtually vanished. Thankfully, the memers over at Reddit’s “The_Donald” are happy to set the record straight.

This meme takes a direct aim at Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, a self-described “democratic socialist” who honeymooned in the USSR and once praised Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez as a political hero. Considering the South American country’s current state, it’s easy to see why Sanders is so easy to make fun of.

As President Donald Trump said during his last address to the United Nations, the problem socialism in places like Venezuela is not that it was implemented haphazardly, but rather faithfully.
