The Left’s New Love For McCain is Completely Fabricated

Ever since Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of brain cancer, America’s left-wing memers have taken up the practice of pretending he was one of their own. But, it wasn’t long ago when such a deadly diagnosis would have been celebrated by the same people.

This post made it to the top of Reddit’s Advice Animals, a simple thread which has long since strayed form its original format (which primarily dealt with humorous personal strife). The text pays homage to McCain, suggesting Democrats are more sincere in their best wishes for the senator than his actual colleagues.

“I don’t always agree with your politics,” the post reads. “But I will never forget your service, how you stood up for Obama, and how you denounced the Russians.”

The first part of this is accurate – Senator McCain did in fact stand up for former President Barack Obama when he ran against him in 2008. When one of his town hall attendants suggested he was an Arab Muslim, the senator corrected her by pointing out neither of those descriptives were true.

This is where the truth gets murky.

McCain has denounced the Russians, but so has virtually the rest of the Republican Party. In 2012, liberal outlets and even President Obama himself mocked Mitt Romney for suggesting the Kremlin was America’s largest national security threat. Democrats only changed course when they found an excuse to delegitimize Donald Trump’s victory in 2016.

Let’s not also forget that McCain was slammed by the media on daily basis in 2008 for his foreign policy views. There is no reason to accept any leftist praise for McCain as legitimate.
