The American Flag is Not ‘Political’ — That’s the Point

If you thought the ‘#TakeTheKnee’ movement ended with Colin Kaepernick leaving the NFL, you were sorely mistaken.

With the NFL several weeks into its regular season, games all over the country have been relegated to political showdowns. In this meme, however, the content creator contends that politics has been infused with the football program for a long time, evidenced by the overt displays of patriotism in the past.

Now, part of this sentiment is true — the NFL’s politicizing began far before a second-tier quarterback decided it was a good time to get sponsors from progressive companies. However, displaying the American flag has never been part of this equation.

The whole point of the American flag, and the national anthem, is to take a pause from the typical political divisions and appreciate unity within the country. By bending the knee to promote a partisan cause, millionaire football players are accomplishing precisely the opposite.

Comparing these two displays is simply intellectually dishonest.
