Stealing from the Rich Isn’t Health Care

The idea that Republicans gain power by convincing middle class Americans to vote against their interests is a talking point that goes unchallenged way more than it should.

In the meme to the left, we see a generic picture of individuals attending a Trump rally with the caption “we don’t want affordable health care, we demand tax cuts for billionaires!”

First of all, this ignores the fact that Steve Bannon, one of the president’s most loyal supporters (and so-called “voice of the alt-right”), has actually called for a tax plan that increases taxes for the very wealthy.

Second, like most lefty memes, this image draws up a false equivalency. Allowing economic producers to keep more of what they earn has little to do with stripping away health care access for the underclass. Instead, it’s a proven strategy to stimulate economic output. It was this business-friendly tactic that led to the so-called “dot-com boom” of the mid-1990s.

Class warfare as a means to gain political power has failed Democrats time and time again in the past, and will continue to do so if the left keeps doubling down on this sort of rhetoric.
