Reminder: Hate Speech is Still Free Speech

Think about this the next time you hear the phrase “hate speech” thrown at you — what does it actually mean?

While European Union countries actually prosecute people on these grounds, the term has no legal meaning in the United States. So, while an individual living in the United Kingdom can actually face legal action for something as frivolous as criticizing Islam in public, Americans are still protected against such tyranny by the First Amendment.

Defining “hate speech” is, to use one of the left’s favorite words, problematic — because it seems to differ depending on who you ask. Some might claim that hate speech is making open threats in public (which is already illegal). Others would define it more loosely — perhaps labelling something like calling for stricter immigration laws as an implied threat against a particular group of people.

See the problem here?

Americans shouldn’t be afraid to speak their mind, but that is exactly the culture that embracing hate speech laws would create.
