Remember When the Democrats Cared About “Diversity?”

Make no mistake: race is deeply important to the Democratic Party’s platform — it has been ever since it condoned lynchings after the Civil War, and made black Americans sit in the back of the bus in the 1950s.

The post-Cold War Democratic Party became increasingly interested in intersectionality since the Clinton years. This reached a whole new level with the election of Barack Obama in 2008, with party leaders practically taking credit for ending racism forever. We were going to live in a post-racial, post-partisan society.

Well…that didn’t exactly happen. Racial harmony plummeted, and ethnic minorities struggled with finding and keeping jobs all throughout the Obama presidency. Apparently, it took a virulent, mouth-breathing racist to repair this damage. Of course, this person was not and has never been a racist, but that’s the narrative we’ve been putting up with for years.

Going into 2020, many progressives wanted to re-try the formula that worked for them in 2008. But with old white men leading the polls, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.
