This political cartoon got left-leaning news website Politico into a lot of trouble, and they certainly deserve it.
In it, we see caricatures of “Texans” thanking government angels for rescuing them while subsequently brandishing anti-government symbols.
The insult here is two-fold. It targets not only Texans themselves as they recover from one of the worst floods in American history, but also religious conservatives.
Now, Politico’s tastelessness for publishing such material in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Harvey doesn’t really leave much room for debate. However, the caricatures do reveal just how disconnected liberals are from mainline Americans.
Let’s get one thing straight: most Christians in America don’t believe in or expect to see literal angels climbing down from Heaven to intervene in our ordinary lives. According to contemporary Judeo-Christian doctrine, “angels” can actually take the form of any person willing to do good.
As the Daily Wire recently pointed out, even the word “angel” comes from the Hebrew word for “messenger”. The fact the same term was applied to both beings is not an accident.
If you’re going to make fun of an entire group of people for their religious beliefs, it probably helps to understand the religion first.
