In keeping with election year tradition, all eyes were on South Florida after the midterms as votes in the state’s two most Democratic counties were still counting votes.
The Sunshine State, known as one of the most purple areas in the United States when it comes to elections, was the site of one of the most definitive races of the year. In a surprise upset, Trump-backed Republican Ron Desantis pulled a victory against progressive Democrat Andrew Gillum.
Much like Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke in Texas, Gillum was a celebrated figure in the mainstream media. If successful, a win for Gillum would have broken a long string of Republican gubernatorial wins in the state. Despite projections that this would be the case, Republican voters turned out in large numbers on election day, and were ultimately successful in defeating him.
The Senate race between Florida Governor Rick Scott and incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson was a different story. Despite Senator Nelson’s concession, voting districts in Palm Beach and Broward counties insisted on recounts. 48 hours after the votes were case, they were still counting.
We can only imagine the Democratic headquarters looked like this at the time.
