Liberal HBO Viewers Just Don’t See the Irony Here

If you’re one of the few HBO subscribers that didn’t cancel the day after Game of Thrones had its lukewarm conclusion, you’ve had the chance to watch the network’s latest hit series, Chernobyl.

As the program’s title suggests, it follows the events after the titular nuclear power plant explosion in Ukraine — which was then a part of the Soviet Union, and thus subject to communist rule. Those who have seen the show, known the history, or both know that the event was met with an alarming level of incompetence and political posturing. Instead of putting politics aside and just taking action to contain the radiation, Soviet workers were more concerned about not being sent to a gulag.

Like any good hit series is known to do, it inspired its viewers to broadcast their hot takes on the internet. Apparently, many of the people who have watched the show failed to understand the critical lesson behind it — authoritarian communism isn’t the best fail safe for solving problems. Nevertheless, the problem was blamed on capitalism, despite the fact that the show takes place in the Soviet Union, which was famously known for fighting against capitalism throughout its entire existence.
