Keep This in Mind When Politicians Promise More Free Stuff This Year

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”

It’s a lesson we all should have learned in high school economics, but apparently that lesson didn’t take. Sure, learning about supply and demand curves is one of the least interesting things imaginable during those years, but the fact that this basic element of common sense is all but missing from our culture and politics is a serious problem.

When a government introduces a new public service, good, or whatever else — it needs a new funding mechanism. This is why Obamacare was mandatory: there was simply no way to finance those “affordable” healthcare plans without making other people pay for it.

Here’s another rough lesson: the government doesn’t actually have any money. This isn’t unique to the United States — no government does. It pays for things with other people’s money — the taxpayers. So, when someone like Senator Bernie Sanders dangles something over your head like “free healthcare,” he’s already lying to you. That money has to come from somewhere, or the program simply cannot exist.

Nothing is free in this world, or any world for that matter. Nothing comes from nothing. So, this is the real choice: do you want to control your own expenditures, or would you like bureaucrats who don’t really care about you that much to do that instead?
