Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the gift that keeps on giving…for Republicans.
Even before Ocasio-Cortez won her unsurprising victory, she was dropping gems left and right. Her plan to fund a Medicare for All program was to “just pay for it.” Her examples of successful socialist countries were capitalist European states with less business regulations than the United States. Most recently, she urged fellow progressives to take over “all three branches of government” — which according to her includes “the House, the Senate, and the presidency.”
If you’re confused, let’s revisit 3rd grade civics for a second — the three branches of government in the United States are the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. The legislature includes all of Congress — that is, the House of Representatives as well as the Senate.
Sure, these are all just gaffes — our real problem with Ocasio-Cortez is her wild ideology. The programs she advocates for are unsustainable and unrealistic. More than that, they are woefully ineffective. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy these gems when we find them.
