How Does One Support Background Checks, but Oppose Borders?

Recently, a satirical Twitter account mocking Speaker of the House Paul Ryan tweeted out what was likely expected to be a slam-dunk, but turned out to be a gaping hole of hypocrisy.

In the text, Ryan is shown making the argument against terrorists having guns, but refusing to implement some sort of federal background check to make sure that this doesn’t happen.

This begs the question…how would liberals respond if the wording was a bit different?

Let’s try this out right now, using the progressive left’s favorite politician as a hypothetical.

Bernie Sanders: “We need to make sure our country is safe from terrorism.”

Do you support background checks for migrants entering the country?

Bernie Sanders: “No.”

See? The whole argument falls on its face within seconds.

Predictably, a liberal might respond by saying that the issue of gun control and terrorism are unrelated. But if that’s true, what’s the danger with allowing Americans to purchase firearms with absolutely no government oversight? Does this make the terror threat larger or smaller?

Of course, conservatives understand that only the good guys bother to follow the actual laws, so this doesn’t really matter that much. But in the liberal mind, everything revolves around government authority — except immigration, apparently.
