Oh…wait…never mind.
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has been waning in popularity in recent weeks — suggesting that the octogenarian’s cult-like status with younger American voters may finally be coming to an end. It’s rather ironic that, like socialism, Sanders may have sounded really nice on paper but was unable to deliver in real life.
A big part of the Sanders spell was the effort to rebrand socialism as a warm and fuzzy ideology that’s just all about helping people — ignoring the fact that this is the same ideology espoused by the 20th century authoritarian communists who starved their people to death everywhere they went.
This rebranding effort included an attempt to ignore places like Venezuela, Cuba, Maoist China, and the Soviet Union, and focus instead on places like Denmark and Norway — which are not socialist countries. The Danish government even went so far as to publicly rebuke Sanders’ claim that they were socialist in 2016.
There’s a reason why Sanders only focuses on countries like those in Scandinavia. Socialism has a zero percent success rate, so the senator is forced to list countries that might sound socialist because of their welfare policies. But of course, having a nice pension plan for government workers isn’t the same as planning an entire economy from the top down.
