Border Security Isn’t Racist

This is a strawman argument we’ve been hearing for a long time, but racially charged events in Charlottesville, Va. have sparked a whole new round of baseless attacks against conservatives.

After the clash between white supremacists and far-left Antifa militants resulted in the death of a civilian, President Donald Trump was pressured to condemn racist rhetoric — which he did. After falling to name names by calling out white supremacy specifically, Trump issued a follow-up statement for clarification.

Apparently even this wasn’t enough.

Now, it’s true that we would have good reason to expect the president to name names. After all, he had no problem (correctly) calling out former President Barack Obama for not singling out radical Islamic terrorism. So, calling out the president’s failure to do the same for the events in Charlottesville is a perfectly valid criticism. However, bringing border security into the equation is just idiotic.

There are a couple blatant falsehoods we have to look at here. First of all, Muslims have not been banned from entering the United States. Citizens of the largest Muslim-majority nations are still permitted to travel here. Second, the proposed construction of a border wall along the southern border has less to do with “keeping out Mexicans”, and more to do with keeping cartels based in Mexico at bay.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms to levy against the president — as there will be for every president after he leaves the White House. This sad attempt at virtue signaling fails to accomplish this in any meaningful way.
